Brandenburger Tor - Potsdam, Germany
Glorious Gate (11.05.2008 10:05)
How small it is, was what I thought when I walked through it the first time. Like many other Germans I had waited for this opportunity for a long time, for nearly 30 years it had been behind The Wall when you were a Wessi (a citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany) and beyond the so-called death zone running in front of The Wall if you were an Ossi (citizen of the German Democratic Republic). Munich Walk Tour - Munich, Germany
No Pride, but Prejudice (11.05.2008 10:02)
When I was in Munich and saw an ad for the Munich Walk Tour, I thought, why not? Why not find out what foreigners tell foreigners about Munich? (Im German, you know) Starting from the Marienplatz the guide, a young woman from Australia, began with a survey on the history of Munich from the year it was officially founded up to today and covered 800 years in about 10 minutes. Our tour wasn´t [more...] -
Loro Parque - Puerto de la Cruz, Spain
Dancing Dolphins, Pedalling Parrots (10.05.2008 21:54)
The moment tourists set foot on Tenerife they get to know that Loro Parque is one, if not the attraction of the island, a huge poster welcomes them, all trolleys in the airport carry a small one. So that they won´t forget the message, each bin on the island (more than 10 000 all in all) has a poster, too, showing a photo or a design of one of the animals of this small zoo. It´s situated in [more...] -
Grünes Gewölbe - Dresden, Germany
Dear Diamond (10.05.2008 21:42)
The Green Vault is a must-see for any visitor to Dresden, the capital of Saxony in the east of Germany. Its Europes most sumptuous treasure chamber, if you havent heard of it yet, this may be due to the fact that it was hidden behind the Iron Curtain for decades. Before Im going to take you with me on a tour, I have to tell you three things: 1) There isnt one Green Vault, there are two. 2) [more...] -
The Covered Bazaar - Istanbul, Turkey
Haggler's Heaven (10.05.2008 19:43)
Already at home I knew what Id do first when in Istanbul, namely, go to the Bosphorus and look at ships. Alas, it was raining when we arrived two days before Easter, so that wasn‘t a good idea. What then? We had to find something covered and near our hotel, we felt like walking after sitting still in the plane for three hours. The Turkish woman whod met us at the airport (we knew her from the [more...] -
Inner City of Athens - Athens, Greece
Tainted Temples (10.05.2008 19:30)
When we travelled to Cyprus at the end of February two years ago we couldnt get a direct flight on the days we had chosen but had to change in Athens. We decided to put in a stopover on the way back home and visit the Greek capital, we had already been there in the 1970s but thought that after thirty odd years our memory could do with some brushing up. We took a taxi to our hotel and looked [more...] -
Casabela - Ferragudo, Portugal - September, 2006
Fish 'n Figs (10.05.2008 14:38)
When we had decided on the Algarve in the south of Portugal for our summer hols last year the woman in the travel agency recommended the hotel Casabela in Ferragudo, a village about 65 km west of Faro where the international airport is. It is situated two kilometres outside the village on the slope of the elevated coastline, from the street only two storeys can be seen, from the sea side there [more...] -
Palazzo Ducale - Urbino, Italy
Top Town (10.05.2008 13:39)
Should you ever spend your summer hols on the Adriatic coast between Rimini and Ancona, tear yourself away from the beach for a day, travel inland for about an hour and visit Urbino, a town which is on the list of UNESCOs cultural heritage. Urbino is situated on the top of a hill, it is completely surrounded by a high brick wall and dominated by a castle. Leave your car in the car park at the [more...] -
Insel Mainau - Constance, Germany
Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose (10.05.2008 13:23)
Last year at Whitsun I was in Sweden for two hours without leaving Germany, sort of. ? Our day out takes us to the largest lake of Germany, the Lake Constance, in German ´der Bodensee´. How large it is is impossible to say, because Austria and Switzerland have a share, too, the border lines run through the water. Our aim is the Isle of Mainau, off the town of Constance (in German Konstanz) [more...] -
Cologne Cathedral - Cologne, Germany
Heinzelmännchen's Home (10.05.2008 09:19)
HEINZELMÄNNCHENS HOME The other day I was in Köln am Rhein, the fourth largest German city with nearly one million inhabitants, Cologne on the Rhine for you, Colonia Agrippina for the Old Romans; the wife of Emperor Claudius was born on the banks of the Rhine and elevated her colonia to the status of a city in the year 50 A.D.
