Auditorio de Tenerife - Santa Cruz, Spain
    Audacious Auditorium (05.06.2008 19:51)
When we stayed in Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife in December last year, I went on a coach tour to the north east of the island including the capital Santa Cruz. Our first stop was the auditorium in Santa Cruz (built from 2000 to 2003) at the southern end of the harbour area, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who is famous for combining architecture, engineering, and [more...]

    Four Famous Animals (02.06.2008 20:15)
You are standing in front of the City Hall, go round the left corner and you will find the statue of the four town musicians, their correct address is Unser Lieben Frauen Kirchhof (Churchyard, Church of our Lady). The bronze sculpture was created in 1951 by the artist Gerhard Marcks. You remember The Brothers Grimms fairy tale? A donkey, a dog, a cat and a cock escape from their owners who [more...]

Palace of Knossós - Heraklion, Greece
    Bonking Bulls (02.06.2008 14:07)
Today I want to tell you why Europe is called Europe, come with me to Crete, to the Palace of Knossòs (stress on the second syllable) to be precise, and I'll tell you the myth and also some others which you may already have heard or read about but maybe don't associate with this Greek island. We're in the Bronze Age, in the third millenium BC , one day Zeus, the leader of the gods, who was [more...]

    Panorama - Elsfleth, Germany

Last Bratwurst Before America - Cabo de Sao Vincente, Portugal
Last Bratwurst Before America (22.05.2008 17:12)
The Cabo de São Vicente is the most south-western point of the European mainland. Already the Celts worshipped this place, the Romans consecrated it to Saturn and the Christians to Saint Vicente whose corpse is said to have been washed ashore in the area about 300 BC. They built a cloister which was destroyed by Sir Francis Drake, the remains disappeared in the great earthquake in 1755. In the [more...]

Mercado de San Lorenzo - Florence, Italy
    Merry Market (21.05.2008 14:01)
Standing in front of the Duomo facing the façade, you should look to the right where you can see traffic lights. Cross there and youll be in the street leading to the street market San Lorenzo, famous for leather handbags, gloves, shoes, belts and jackets. All stalls display the sign ‘Fixed Prices, haggling is looked down upon, this is not the south of Italy. Nearly all salespeople know English [more...]

The Orchid Garden - Puerto de la Cruz, Spain
    Sexy Orchids (19.05.2008 19:09)
One of the lesser known attractions of Puerto de la Cruz, the resort in the north of Tenerife, is the Orchid Garden Sitio Litre. The mansion was built in 1730 and in 1774 the British merchant Archibald Little bought it together with a piece of land which he converted into a beautiful garden. Sitio is the Spanish word for site and the surname Little somehow changed into Litre. In 1856 the Vice [more...]

Let me introduce you to Padre Pio and show you his church. If you‘re not a pious Catholic, no Christian, maybe no believer at all, you may not know who I‘m talking about. Padre Who? Let me tell you that he‘s the top saint of the Catholic church, he‘s the No 1 of all 821 saints. Schnoor - Bremen, Germany
    Olde Worlde Bremen (18.05.2008 18:17)
If you want to know what Bremen looked like in the olden days many centuries ago, visit the Schnoor. Look out for the Church of St. John (St. Johannis Kirche), walk down some steps and youll find yourself in a maze of narrow (about 4 m wide) alleyways. Small houses stand side by side in a row, lined up like pearls on a string - ‘Schnur in German or ‘Schnoor in local dialect. Originally fishers, [more...]
