Theater/ OperaGrauman's Chinese Theatre > Review

When I've visited the USA in 1991 with a group of students, we had only two days to visit LA, so we had to decide which attractions we will visit and which we will skip, considering our lack of time.
Unfortunately, our first choice, which seemed so natural and logical, was to visit the famous Chinese Theatre and Walk of Fame.
When we have reached the street, we were walking with our maps and almost passed by the famous theatre, without noticing it, but the unusual mass of people made us suspicious, so we looked more carefully and recognized the building. My first thought was that it was abnormally small and narrow. I just couldn't stop wondering how come it looks much, much bigger on TV than in real (I even thought that we have found the back entrance by mistake). But there was no mistake - that thing WAS it. OK, what's done is done, so we tried to find some famous prints on the pavement and that was disappointment No. 2 - only few recognizable names. Others were names of some ancient-history actors, and you probably have to be very educated in that field, to know who they are.
Since the space is so narrow, there was always someone leaning on your back, so it was almost impossible to make a decent photo, but on the other side, there was not much to photograph.
Disappointed and feeling hoaxed, we did not want to enter the theatre and waste more of our time, that we could spent somewhere else in some more interesting places.
I know that visiting Chinese Theatre is a must, because it is one of the most famous places in LA, and that not visiting it would be like skipping Prater in Vienna, or the Red Square in Moscow, but I still cannot recommend anyone to visit it. There's nothing much to see and I hated it, and the only other attraction close by is the walk of Fame. So, if you don't have much time to waste - don't go there.

I had exactly the same thoughts when I've visited during the late 80ies, but at least I found out that Mickey Mouse has approximately the same shoe size as I do. The whole area around Hollywood Boulev [more...]
