Compiled for you: The facts!Details Hollywood Sign
| Description: |
Since its construction as an advertisement sign for a real estate company in 1923 the Hollywood sign has become probably one of the most famous landmarks in the world. The 45 ft high letters are located North of Mulholland Highway on Mount Lee, within the boundaries of Griffith Park. The sign, which originally spelled "Hollywoodland" was changed to the spelling it is now famous for in 1949 when also the missing letter "H", which had been destroyed during an accident, was replace. Vandalism and decay took its toll and several letters were damaged over the years. In 1973 it was declared a Los Angeles Cultural Historical Monument and the sign underwent a total revamp in 1978, following a campaign during which sponsors for each of the new letters had been found. It is now prohibited to hike up to the sign which is sealed of by a fence. However, there are several spots surrounding the sign from where it can be photographed, for a listing please visit the website. |
