Shopping for the Greedy

[Zmugzy, 20.12.2007] Harrods is one of the more reputable shopping experiences in London, personally I‘d rather hang out in Camden market. The produce on sale in Harrods is strictly up market and the ambience inside is one of excessive opulence combined with sheer snobbery. It is well situated outside the Knightsbridge tube stop but getting into the store is another matter.

The first time I tried to enter Harrods I was refused entry because I was wearing jeans. I thought this was disgraceful as my general attire was of quite smart appearance and I was wearing expensive Levis. I did eventually get in on my second visit to London in a pair of brown corduroys and a pair of extra shiny shoes. Although my hair was rather untidy and I hadn't washed behind my ears, this didn't seem to matter.

Harrods is a seasonal favourite for Christmas shoppers who've got more money than sense. Some people even travel from abroad and put this shop near the top of their must-see list. What a sad world we live in! Of course the place is also packed with people like me who just wander around and don't spend a penny.

Inside Harrods you will find plenty to titillate your senses. Everything is so sparkly and shiny you might have to wear a pair of sunglasses. Theres a wide range of goods but you'll be lucky if you find what you're looking for unless you stumble upon it by accident as there is a lack of useful directions (Why cant they have arrows like Ikea?) and shop assistants are a rare commodity. If you do find a shop assistant they'll probably ignore you or pretend that they're too busy to help. They also communicate in a strange language of which I have never yet managed to decipher. Nevertheless there are some remarkable displays and the giant food hall and confectionery area are quite impressive. There are some nice restaurants and a gorgeous tea room were you can take refuge from the Prada bags and Gucci shoes, but once again you'll have to dig deep or take out a second mortgage if you want to buy a cream bun and a Espresso.

Recommended for millionaires who dont wear jeans.
