DAnneC rated the British Museum five of five stars. She noted "it is a must see during your trip to London". On a trip in 2000 the British Museum was "the first item on my personal agenda". The British Museum "long ago established the standard for the preservation of antiquities". She was thrilled by "gazing in awe at mythical beast" which once guarded ancient Mesopotamian cities. There was "a series of Egyptian monuments" as well as many other galleries containing such treasures as "Assyrian reliefs, Etruscan bronze weaponry and exquisite Greek and Roman vases". Among all this vast treasure of human history her favorite was "the museums astonishing collection of Parthenon Sculptures, otherwise known as the Elgin Marbles".
Not without controversy the collections are either viewed as "a storehouse for some of the grandest thefts of all time" or by the other side the museum (and others of its type) it should be "praised for preserving some of humanity's greatest masterpieces". Setting aside the controversy "the British Museum is a must see for anyone with a passion for the ancient accomplishments of humanity".
The museum is nearing it 250th year with a well established tradition to "combine practical and scholarly research with public education". Officially admission is free however a small contribution to costs is "seriously encouraged". Additionally there is a good cafeteria which is not like many where the food is fast and the atmosphere is noisy and crowded while at the British Museum had "a setting that encourages relaxed conversation or quiet reflection". It was "not cheap neither is it terribly expensive".
