He states that it is the "most prestigious gallery in Britain".Here the "national collection" is on display, not only covering "British art from the 16th century to the present day" but also "international works". As the whole collection is "much too large to be displayed at once", the exhibits will change. The author writes that visitors to the Tate can expect to see "some of the best of Gainsborough, Reynolds, StubbsBlake and Cosntable". Works of William Hogarth are "well presented" and the Tate owns the "largest collection of works by a single artist" with works from JMW Turner .
There are also the "works of many major 19th-and 20th-century painters" of which the author names "Matisse, Dali, Picasso, Modigliani" and others. He also marveled at the "enormous abstract canvases by Mark Rothko", which he rates as "remarkable", and the "group of paintings and sculptures by Giacometti".
As a special tip the author recommends a visit to the "Gallery shop" after seeing the gallery, as the found some of the "best art books and postcards in London" there. He also tried the Coffee Shop, where he found the "cakes and pastries" as "excellent" and states that the "Rex Whistler art" does not only offer "good food" but also the "best and most reasonably priced wine list in London".
