Just off the Strand, in central London, The Savoy, a "swish" and "gorgeous hotel", with even the street to its name, "oozes old-style Hollywood glamour". Opened in 1889, after having been rebuilt on the Savoy Palace site, which was "burnt down in the Peasants Revolt of 1831", the Savoy has welcomed "well-known names and faces", such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor or Monet, who painted the view from his guestroom window.
Katja Gaskell claims that "from the moment you see the Savoy", and "are welcomed by the green-liveried doormen", you get the impression that you are "stepping into a black-and-white Hollywood remake of your life"! There is a real "sense of history" about this hotel. It has beautiful "views of the Thames", and the guestrooms are "elegantly decorated".
For "the most refined tastes", the Lonely Planet Guide recommend the near by, "opera or the ballet" at Covent Garden, "followed by dinner back at the hotel". The Savoy Grill, is a "Michelin-starred" restaurant. The guide then gives us directions to the hotel "right out of Charing Cross station onto the Strand".
