[more]St Lawrence Jewry can be found at the south side of the yard of London's guildhall in one of the oldest parts of the city. The original church was built during the early 12th century and erected on top of the Roman Amphitheatre of Londinium, at the edge of the Jewish area of the medieval town.
This original church was destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was replaced by a church designed by Christopher Wren and reopened in 1687.
On December 29, 1940 it was heavily damaged during an air raid and again needed to be rebuilt, this by Cecil Brown who followed the design of Christopher Wren.
St Lawrence Jewry is is now the official Church of the Corporation of London.
