[more]In 1957 Whitbread & Co, a UK based hospitality company, purchased an entire exhibition about Sherlock Holmes that had been collected for the 1951 Festival of Britain by the Marylebone Borough Library and Abbey National and which had just returned to the UK following a world tour after the end of the festival. The exhibition, the first and most important about Sherlock Holmes in the world, found a home in the companies' newly acquired pub, the Northumberland Arms, which was renamed into The Sherlock Holmes.
Supported by the family of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the pub was filled with the artifacts and today showcases the entire collection on its premises, including a replica of the sitting room and study of the famous detective. Further items have been added since the pubs first opening in 1957.
The pub offers a bar at the ground level with an additional outside sitting area on the street and a restaurant and roof top terrace on the upper level.
The bar offers a selection of traditional English ales and ciders, as well as imported beer, wines, spirits and liqueurs. Cold and hot bar food is sold throughout the whole day.
The restaurant offers a Sherlock Holmes orientated fare and you are welcome to try "A Case of Identity" (chicken liver pate) or "The Illustrious Client" (melon) for starters, while "Sherlocks Own Favourite" (sirloin steak), "Sir Arthur Conan Doyles" (traditional roast topside of beef), "A Scandal in Bohemia" (breast of duck) and more can be enjoyed as a main course.
