I have just come back from a 2 day trip to London as part of my birthday celebrations and it has to be said that before leaving I must have checked the online map of the london underground about a million times to make sure I knew which way I was going and on which lines I had to be on!!
Upon arriving into Heathrow I made my way to the ticket booth to purchase my tickets - I had already looked into this too as to how much it would be (£4 each) to travel from zone 1 into zone 6 as a one way trip. After getting our tickets we made our way through to the platforms and even though we had a change to kake part way, we managed to get to our destinantion of Notiing Hill gate with no problem what so ever!! I don't know wether this was partly because of the forward planning or not but even if I hadn't the maps were displayed at every station with easy to follow tube lines all in different colours making it easy to read and understand.
The second day we worked out we could buy a day card for use between zones 1 - 6 for all day use and this worked out very handy as it enabled us to go all around the city and then also back to the airport for £7 each which I thought was not too bad. However it is easy to work out that if you were making a tube journey every day inand out of the city that it can end up being quite expensive!!
Some useful tips:
These are just some things that I used to make my trip easier!
The statio have maps dotted around on the walls so you can check these as do the trains themselves. However little maps are provided on the stations which are free so pick one of these up to carry around as it makes it that bit easier.
The ticket machines are really easy to use so take advantage of these.
Somethig that confused me at first was knowing which side of the platform to board on...check the map of which way you are going and then see what station is at the end of the line as this will be displayed as the destinantion on the front of the train and on the board that tells you how long until the train is due to arrive. Some people will already know this but I didn't so for those that don't this is worth noting!
If you are going for longer and want to save money then get an oyster card as this you an pre load with money to use on all transport links throughtout the city and it gives a better price too!
If still in doubt ask the staff - they are after all there to help!!

You can use an oyster card, well londoners use this anyway. Very useful review. Or from Harrow you can get a 140 bus to Heathrow airport.
