Palais et Musée historique d'Abomey

Abomey ist eine Stadt in der Republik Benin, ca. 65 Meilen von der Küste des Golfs von Guinea entfernt, und die frühere Hauptstadt des Königreichs der Dahomey. Gegründet im 17. Jahrhundert, hatte die Stadt ihre Blütezeit zwischen dem 17. und 19. Jahrhundert, als die Könige Macht und Reichtum erlangten mit dem Handel von Sklaven. Davon zeugen die königlichen Paläste, eine Gruppe von Lehmbauten, die in dieser Zeit errichtet wurden. Als der letzte König von Dahomey 1892 von den Franzosen besiegt wurde, setzte er Abomey in Brand. Daher existieren auf dem Areal von ca. einem halben Quadratkilometer Fläche nur noch die Ruinen der zahlreichen Paläste. In einem der Gebäude befindet sich das Abomey Historical Museum, das 1943 von der französischen Kolonialregierung geschaffen wurde. Das Gelände wurde 1985 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt. Öffnungszeiten: Montag bis Sonntag von 9.00 bis 18.00 Uhr Am 1. Januar geschlossen.
