It was immediately after an overnight trip on the Harwich Hook of Holland ferry (not a journey I recommend) but even in my befuddled state (can one be channel-lagged?) I recognised two things. Firstly the place was a knock-out, and secondly my husband would love it. It has taken until this year to unite him with the Keukenhof. This tulip exhibition is given two stars - "worth a detour". It appears on page 243 of the 2003 edition of the Guide. Described as the "showcase for Dutch growers", this "extraordinary garden" attracts nearly 900,000 visitors. These former castle gardens are laid out in the English style and include water features and works of art. The "brilliant colours" of the flowers contrast with the "cool greens" of the grass and trees. Flowering shrubs and "themed gardens" add to the "splendour". A windmill provides a "splendid view" of the surrounding bulbfields.
