A Museum that is well worth a peek

, 16/04/2009] Two museums have been opened in the monastery and both are worth taking a stroll through. The Museu da Marinha (Maritime Museum) is my favourite and although I am not one to stand for hours scrutinising every little detail like my Mother-in-law does, I find this museum fascinating and always spend longer here - probably because it covers every aspect of the sea. Originally the museum was housed in the Naval School of Lisbon but after a terrible fire when some of the exhibits were destroyed it was moved north of Lisbon. Frommers very highly recommend the Museu de Marinha and state that it is "one of the best in Europe" with displays of "royal galleys" which "drip with gilt" and "re-create an age of opulence". On display also are "hundreds of models of 15th- to 19th-century sailing ships" as well as "a full range of Portuguese naval uniforms" and some exhibits relating to "early Portuguese aviators". There is also a "model of the queen's stateroom on the royal yacht" and a "pearl-inlaid replica of a dragon boat" on display.
