Novelist Will Self writes about his stay at 42 The Calls in Leeds in his on-line Blog. Readers should be warned that Mr Self who is renowned for his very 'gritty' and sometimes quite 'rude' language and the link to the original contains the occasional swear word or colourful imagery.
Self has been staying at 42 the Calls for more than 10 years - usually when on promotional book tours. On this occasion he was upgraded to a suite "and what a suite!". It's a "charming collection of rooms" which have been "tastefully decorated" and has "rough hewn wooden beams". The sitting room is "dominated" by a black table and six chairs, plus a "wide-screen interactive television" Self describes it as like "Anne Hathaways cottage had been impregnated by the Starship Enterprise" to create a room that's "all interior and no surface". He turns his attention to the TV, which he had been assured would "enable me to send and receive email". However after a lot of "faffing around" with the TV he couldn't get the system to work and had to call "Nice Tim" the manager to help him, to no avail. After an hour of trying he was invited to use the computer in the office where the manager even let him smoke a cigar. After typing for an hour he hit the 'send' button only to find the server "time had expired" and he'd lost all his work.
