The Lanimers is celebrated in June. The main procession is between the 6th and 12th.
Lanark Lanimer week begins on Sunday with the sahing of the Lord Cornet. The Lord Cornet is appointed by a committee of local town people who have contributed to the town over the years. The Lord Cornet's main duty is to check the town's boundry stones on the Monday night. This is known as the Marches.
Thursday is the most important day. There is a huge parade featuring floats from local schools and organisations. The pupils from the local schools also appoint a lanimer queen. The queen is crowned on Thursday. There are seven schools in the area and so each school chooses a queen once every seven years. Stanmore is a school for special needs and don't appoint a queen but they still manage to get 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize in the best float competition! Every school also has the duty of choosing the Lanimer court. The Chief maids, crown bearer and septer bearer come from the same school as the queen but the rest of the court come from all seven schools.
Many different bands perform all through the week. This is my mum's favourite part of the week. The bands are normally quite good and always walk in the paradeand in the Marches. There is a big performance on the Wednesday at the town cross (in front of St. Nicholas Church. This is also where the queen is crowned.)
On Thursday and Friday night there is a big reception for the queen. All of the schools sing for the queen at the reception and then all bow in front of her at the end. Not much more happens.
Many other things happen through the week but how much more do you expect a thirteen year old to take in? I'm not even allowed to go to most of the things because they start too late. Everything else is briliant, though. If your visiting Lanark then you should definately come during the Lanimers.
