The Italian Chapel
Date published: Aug 2000
Author: stuart
User review
Visiting the Italian chapel was something "completely unique" for this reviewer. Built by Italian war prisoners using "two Nissen huts", the inside of the chapel is "beautifully decorated" and its "Italian style" offers a contrast with the "Northern landscape" he found "striking". Beyond the actual building, what was "fascinating" were the "human stories", and Italian relatives of prisoners visiting the place lent it a "wonderful spiritual feeling".

Out of their "homesickness" and of the "strength of their religious faith" grew a "replica of a Renaissance chapel". Using only "the barest materials", the men "pooled" their skills to create a "tiny patch of Italy" in the "elaborate" architecture made of two "grimly functional" Nissen huts. Today, the chapel "speaks volumes" to the visiting public about the "strength of mind and heart" of these Italians and the power of t
