Rajiv Chowk Metro Station - Delhi, India
Please don't ride on the roof (17.07.2008 19:21)
I'd like to start with a small experiment. I'll give you two words - please read them, then close your eyes and form a mental picture. Got that? Good. The two words are: INDIA and TRAINS Now take a couple of seconds and imagine! I'm willing to hazard a guess that most of you got a picture in your mind of one of the old empire steam trains, a big black one perhaps with [more...]

Birmingham International Airport - Birmingham, United Kingdom
The easy way to fly from the Midlands (17.07.2008 19:04)
When I was a kid, I loved going to airports but as I grew up the whole airport experience started to become just a tedious part of life. Most of the time, airports are little more than slightly-glorified bus stations. So today, if I have a choice and if it serves the destination I need, my first choice is always Birmingham. Birmingham Airport is situated to the East of Birmingham, close to the [more...]

Mercure Amsterdam Airport - Schiphol, Netherlands - July, 2008
An airport hotel that's really not very near (14.07.2008 10:48)
We have a rule on trivago that you can only call a hotel an 'airport hotel' if it's less than 1 km from the airport - when you've read this review, you'll realise that rule does make sense! Hotel airports are a drag. Hardly anyone really wants to stay in them and they never seem to try very hard to keep their clients happy because most don't come back very often. Recently I needed a room [more...]

Hesperia Sant Just - Sant Just Desvern, Spain - June, 2008
In the Pink at the Hesperia (05.07.2008 18:23)
There was a time - not so long ago - when business travellers were almost all men and suppliers to the industry (airlines, hotels etc) built their offer around what men wanted. Cutting edge hotel décor was of the 'dark wood - black leather - lots of chrome' variety that's apparently supposed to appeal to the boys. Examples of not feeling completely at home in hotels include being frequently [more...]

VIP Arts - Lisbon, Portugal - June, 2008
    Is it Arty-Smarty or just Arty-Farty? (29.06.2008 18:27)
I love Lisbon; it's a fantastic city with lots to offer and plenty to see, but sadly on this occasion I wasn't going to get the chance to see much at all. I arrived at the hotel around 11 pm and was off again next morning at 9 am. However, even in such a brief stay, I think it's possible to get an impression of a hotel. The Arts is a four star hotel and is part of the Portuguese VIP hotel [more...]

    Cidnay - Porto, Portugal - June, 2008
A hotel that totally exceeded my expectations (20.06.2008 16:58)
Where is it? The most important thing to know if you are considering this hotel is that it isn't in Porto - it's actually in the town of Santo Tirso, a small industrial town about half an hour north of Porto. I would imagine you'd probably only go there for business or because you knew someone local. Wikipedia tells me the population is 14,000 and it has a football team but if there are any [more...]

Mill House - Ashington, United Kingdom - June, 2008
The Mill House is Sadly Run of the Mill (17.06.2008 17:21)
I stayed at the Mill House recently and was simultaneously impressed and depressed by what I found. I liked my room, which was exceptionally pretty and I liked the setting but the food was poor, the service ‘patchy and the public areas just a bit too much like a 1980s country pub with no customers. Location The hotel is in the tiny village of Ashington, about ten miles north of Worthing and [more...]

Hip Hip Ouray - except when it rains (08.06.2008 15:22)
A nice little motel / hotel right in the middle of town with limited facilities but a great location. However, probably the worst night's sleep I've had in years. [more...]

Holiday Inn Paris-St Germain Des Pres - Paris, France - October, 2007
Not a hotel that will linger in the memory (18.05.2008 20:09)
Sitting in my room at the Holiday Inn in Paris St Germain de Pres I couldn't help but reflect that the designers drew heavily from that area of the colour palette best characterised by the term 'nicotine'. Not a popular colour card at the 'mix your own paint' counter at the decorator centre and with good reason. This is a Holiday Inn that's badly in need of refurbishment and I was rather relieved [more...]
