The reviewer is struck by the echoes of Larkin's poem about this hotel, a copy of which is framed inside. It has the "gloomy late-afternoon atmosphere" with unread newspapers in the lobby, empty, empty corridors and "only a handful of fellow guests" in the dining room. Later in the bar he came across a "Larkin-esque figure if ever I saw one". Nevertheless his room was "small, comfortable" and the food "really rather good". The "sturdy stone building" has had other famous guests including Queen Victoria (hence the name) and John Betjeman. He marks the room 5 / 10, food 6 / 10 and service 7.5
