For this guide book, Kilmartin Glen is "the most important prehistoric site" on the mainland of Scotland. In particular, the linear cemetery is "the most remarkable relic", consisting of a number of cairns "aligned for more than two miles", the real meaning of which "nobody can be sure". One of the cairns, dated about 3000BC is "by far the oldest" and "the most impressive", as it comprises a "large chambered tomb" with a roof of "giant slabs". Close by are two stone circles, "the focus of burials in the area". South of there, one can see some "impressively cup-marked" standing stones, one of which "looms over 10ft high". These cup-and-ring markings have given rise to "many theories", from "Pictish symbols" to "primitive solar calendars".
