Compiled for you: The facts!Details Kilmartin Valley
| Description: |
Kilmartin Glen contains 350 ancient monuments within a six miles radius. Some of these are prehistoric, with standing stones, stone circles, carved stones and cairns. There is also the Dunnad Fort, once the capital of the Kingdom of Dalriada which comprised Arran and part of Northern Ireland as well as this part of Argyll. Below the hill the fort is on, the Moine Mhor (meaning Great Moss in Gaelic) is a nature reserve. This raised bog is a unique environment and a path takes walkers around it, offering explanations on the flora and fauna. The bog itself is dangerous and visitors should not venture on it, as there are deep holes hidden under its surface. In the village of Kilmartin itself, perched above the Glen, visitors can see carved grave-slabs, some dating back as far as 1300. Two more recent castles are also within the village territory, Carnasserie, dating back to 1500 and Kilmartin castle. The Kilmartin House museum helps the visitor interpret the geological landscape of this glacial valley as well as the monuments. |
