Kos lies in the south east of the Aegean Sea and is the third largest of the Greek islands (after both Rhodes and Corfu) and boasts a population of 30,000 that is regularly almost doubled each summer with holiday makers. Our hotel was located about a mile outside of the town of Kardamena which lies on the south side of the island and approx. 15 minutes from the only airport on the island. The resort consists of many bars with about 3 discos and is frequented by the 18-30s holiday group but is also suitable for those looking for a more relaxing holiday. The beach and the harbour are both large focal points in Kardamena.

Setting

The hotel is located just over a mile outside the town of Kardamena which is ideal as its close enough to walk to yet theres no noise or disturbance at night from local party goers. Its situated right opposite a beach, theres literally the coast road separating the hotel from the beach so at most Id say its a 5 minute stroll ideal!

Reception Area

Nothing could have prepared me for walking into the reception area; it had a marble floor with big couches and tables filling the majority of it. Luxury was not the word! Check in was quick and easy, we had to leave our passports for a couple of days and were given a key to our room.

Accommodation

The site is laid out on a hillside and each room is in a row of about 4 with other rooms above you typical of any holiday resort. The room was spacious with a marble floor again to help keep it cool, air conditioning was provided free of charge and made the room deliciously cold with about 1 minute. The air conditioning and electricity were switched on with a magnet attached to the key, this meant that when we went out and took the key the air conditioning had to be switched off clever those Greeks! Rooms slept 3-4 people with 2 twin beds, a sofa bed and if requested, a camp bed I was very surprised how comfy the beds actually were! Also in the room was a dressing table and chair with a hair dryer, a phone, a fridge, a large wardrobe and of course the bathroom that consisted of toilet, sink, bath and shower. I had previously been worried about the state of the bathroom and was pleased to find that the toilet could be flushed! For a 4 hotel Id say this is the exact type of accommodation one would expect clean and pleasantly decorated.

Transport

The Aegean Village complex is quite a large one, with over 300 individual rooms and as its set on a hillside you can imagine the struggle of getting your cases up that steep hill! Luckily the management provide 2 mini buses to taxi you around these drop off at the reception area and by phoning reception you can be picked up outside your room within 10 minutes. My only qualm is the rather erratic driving of the drivers the roads are very narrow and bendy and the drivers seem to enjoy travelling at about 40 miles an hour up and down the hill, all I can say is hold on as theres no seat belts provided!

There's also a bus stop right outside the hotel to take you right across the island and taxis are also priced very cheaply.

Food/Drink

The hotel operates on a bed and breakfast or a half board basis there are over 30 restaurants to choose from in the nearby town but I really would recommend the half board basis just for convenience.

There is only one restaurant at the hotel along with a snack bar and a poolside bar next to the pool. The snack bar is open from 12 till 2 and serves a variety of food such as pizza, salads, chips and sandwiches with the pool bar being open all day and serving sandwiches only. Food here was priced very reasonably with a meal for 2 (a pizza to share and 2 small salads) being priced at around 8 Euros.

The main restaurant was where breakfast (7am 9am) and dinner (6.30pm 9.30pm) were served daily. It was a huge room with seating for over 150 people with the traditional marble floor, pale walls and of course, the beloved air conditioning. Tables were typically for 4 people and we were relieved that we were never asked to share. It was also possible to eat on the terrace outside (approx 10 tables) which overlooked the pool and beach.

The restaurant operates a stretched buffet meaning that you can visit as many times as you like and help yourself! Before the holiday I had been slightly concerned about the food but I really had no need to worry! There was always plenty to choose from with a good selection that was kept fresh at all times.

As for the restaurant staff there was always a chef on hand to carve the meat as well as a good few waiters to replace food and top up trays that were getting low. Waiters were always present to serve drinks and clear your table pretty much as soon as you put your cutlery down!

Dinner consisted of soup, fresh bread, salad, 2 meats, vegetables, potatoes, a fish dish, and another meat dish in the form of a pie or curry and about 5 different deserts! We really did think we were in our element, you could have as much or little as you wanted and not one night were we disappointed by the choice or quality. Breakfast consisted of cereals, fresh bread, fresh fruit and then the usual cooked options (bacon, egg and sausage being the main ones that were there daily).

Drinks were on a pay as you drink basis but we found them to be reasonably priced, a large bottle of water was 1.50 Euros and drinks in the bar ranged from 1 Euro for a soft drink to 4 Euros for a large cocktail.

Staff

We had relatively little contact with the staff members during our time there, we found the restaurant and cleaning staff to be very pleasant always greeting us and offering a comment about the weather, etc. The mini bus drivers were a little quieter rarely even spoke to us! On the one occasion our light broke in the bathroom we reported it to reception where the girl told us someone would be out at some point during the day to replace it by the time we got back from the pool it was fixed! All in all they were very helpful and pleasant as well as impeccably dressed.

Amenities

Along with the restaurant, snack bar and poolside bar there was also a wine bar adjacent to the restaurant that served drinks from 8pm until 12pm decorated like an old style cocktail bar as well as the show room located downstairs with a small bar where entertainment was held every night. During our time there we noticed there was a cabaret night (which we attended, first class), a disco and a bingo night.

The pool was lovely, surrounded by sun loungers (it was best to reserve them when going for breakfast although there were plenty to go round) and one of the largest sized ones Ive seen. Always warm and never full the best combination! Other features included four tennis courts to the side of the complex, which could be booked a day in advance, and all equipment provided, the gymnasium and the indoor pool.

For those of you with children youll be pleased to know there was a full time kids club in operation that started at midday and went on until 5pm and then again for an hour in the evening time to allow parents to relax.

Price

This hotel is a 4 or A Class hotel and so prices tend to be based on that. We were lucky enough to get it for £550 for 2 people on a half board basis in early July - bagged ourselves a bargain!

Prices taken from various websites today can give a rough estimate of typical prices for the coming summer: -

8th June 2005 1 wk 2 people Stansted £889
6th July 2005 1 wk 2 people Stansted £1013
3rd August 2005 1 wk 2 people Stansted £1126

All in all I could not recommend this hotel to you enough, the location is superb for those looking for a lively holiday but slightly set back from the action. When we were there we found there was a mixture of people, some young groups, some families as well as some older couples. It was quite densely populated with Brits which we were pleased about although there were quite a few Germans there too. So if you're stuck on where to go this summer and fancy some sun and luxury... look no further!
