Jarrow is now a town on the south bank of the River Tyne. An Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded here in 681 AD and within it St Paul's Church was built and dedicated in 685 AD. The Venerable Bede entered the monastery as a seven-year-old boy and spent his life writing and documenting monastic life. Bede's World is a museum demonstrating life in the seventh and eighth centuries. It features an exhibition of The Age of Bede, excavations of the monastery ruins and a collection of rare breed animals and a herb garden in the Anglo-Saxon Farm. There is a café and gift shop on site. Open Daily (except Good Friday) April-October 10am 5:30pm (Mon Sat) 12noon 5:30pm (Sun) November-March 10am 4:30pm (Mon Sat) 12noon 4pm (Sun) Tickets: Adult: £4.50 Seniors and children: £3 There is free car parking on site. |
