Small church, big history
St Paul's Church On a recent visit to Bedes World in Jarrow, we also went to St Pauls church, which is a short walk through a park from Bedes World. Visitors wanting to visit the church should follow signs for Bedes World, and parking is available either just outside the church or in Bedes World The church is actually the parish church of Jarrow [more...]

Description: St Paul's served as chapel to a medieval Benedictine monastery and dates back to 681 AD. The church has the oldest still existing dedication stone of all churches in England, a stone slab in the tower of the church features a Latin inscription which shows 23 April 685 AD as the date of its completion, and is a candidate World Heritage Site.
Apart from the dedication stone there are a Saxon cross and chancel and an exhibition of wooden sculptures made by Fenwick Lawson to be seen. The remnants of the monastery St Paul was part of are located behind the church. The ruins of the monastery were domestic buildings that date back to the 11th century and are signed out for visitors.

St Paul's is a living church that serves the Parish of Jarrow and welcomes visitors.
Opening times:

Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm
Sunday 2.30 pm to 4 pm
From December to January closing time is 3pm.
