| Description: |
Naghsh-e Jahan Square - or as it's commonly called 'Imam Square' - is the true heart of the city of Isfahan. Ranked as the world's 6th largest city square (it's about 4 times the size of Moscow's Red Square), it covers approximately 90000 square meters. It was built in the time of Shah Abbas as the focal point for his new capital city. The name Naghsh-e Jahan literally means 'The Pattern of the World'. The square is a rectangular open space with four major attractions symmetrically placed around its sides - the Imam Mosque on the South side, the Ali Qapu Palace on the West, directly opposite the Sheikh Lotfalla Mosque on the East, with the entrance to the Grand Bazaar at the North end. The square has a road running through it towards the north. All around the outside of the square are galleried shops and cafes and in the middle are gardens and fountains. The square is a bustling place at all hours of the day and night and visitors can watch local boys playing football, take a ride in a horse and trap or just find a good cafe to watch the world go by. UNESCO has designated Naghsh-e Jahan Square as a World Heritage Site and it is to this square that the claim 'Isfahan is Half the World' (i.e. meaning Isfahan has half of everything worth seeing in the world) relates. No charge - open 24 hours per day. |
