Originally it was to be three prisons one male, one female and one debtors however funds did not allow for such an ambitious plan and so only one jail was built with a courthouse. The jail was built with 3 foot thick walls on two stories.The jail situated in Church Square in Inveraray has spectacular views over Loch Fyne.
