[timelord, 27.09.2007] For £80 - or £55 if you book in advance - this hotel is having a laugh.
Stay at the George Hotel or book a Bed & Breakfast.
  • First impression was of a fairly spartan rep's room - TV, coffee making facilities, en-suite shower - but closer inspection revealed used soap in the shower, bedside lights that didn't work & a dusty carpet under the bed.
Reminded me of my 'salad days' & bunking down in cheap Middle Eastern hostels, minus the cockroaches thankfully.

  • Beautiful location, but the hotel patently requires a considerable injection of cash to bring it up to modern standards. Having stayed at this hotel before as a conference venue, it saddens me to see the owners trading on past glories, or worse, taking advantage of the transient tourists - Scotland cannot afford to have its reputation as a tourist destination besmirched in this way.
The lack of investment is clearly highlighted by the quality of staff. On the plus side, the front line staff, the majority hailing from Eastern Europe, were keen to please, but without proactive staff development & training it can be of little surprise that they were ill-equipped to deal with the trenchant complaints arising from the food that was served up.
It would also be nice if the staff refrained from smoking prior to bringing guests food - as I say, basic standards & management.
However, there is no excuse for bad manners. After dinner, myself & some work colleagues had repaired to the deserted bar, whereupon I decided to remove the 'Reserved' sign on the one table that would enable our group to sit together. We sat there for over an hour, with the barmaid (Scottish, incidentally) quite content to serve us our drinks. Without warning the table collapsed, which led the barmaid to start shouting at our party for having removed the 'reserved' sign. Outrageous. She ought to have been fired on the spot.

  • Without risking being accused of hyperbole, this hotel served the worst food - EVER.
Lunch was soup & sandwiches - the soup on both occasions was inedible, indeed I was informed that the ludicrously monikered 'chef' had never even risked tasting it himself. The sandwiches were little better, stale & uninspiring.
Later at dinner, our group had develop a keen sense of gallows humour. On considering the menu, a colleague remarked "I was too scared to order the soup!" It turned out to be watery packet soup claiming a cauliflower provenance, a delight in comparison to the main event, a chicken stroganoff concoction that tasted of fish.
The wine list was predictably dull, stuck in a late 1970's time warp, but with 'big city' prices - £11/12 for a bottle of Aussie plonk that could be picked up in Tesco's for £2.99.
The dining room itself was a reflection of the hotels overall decay, plain & resembling how I would imagine a prison refectory.
The good news is that this hotel, if it doesn't get its act together, will go bust.
New owners could only improve it.

  • Great location, which makes the self inflicted disaster area that is the Argyll Hotel all the more galling.
The town of Inveraray is accessible by road, the A83, either by car or (if you are a glutton for punishment) public bus. Nightlife is the pub, & certainly not the bar in this hotel.
