A lovely spot to stop-off on your way to the islands

[Chouchin, 29.01.2008] According to Steve Keenan the location is a winner for this hotel. Not only is it an ideal stopping-off point on the way to Oban and the Inner Hebrides, it is situated on the shores of the loch. The hills opposite are "unblemished by man or holiday cottage". Unfortunately only eight rooms have a view over the water; the reviewer had to lean out of the window and look beyond the new restaurant roof to catch sight of it.

The room was "awkwardly designed", mainly because of the bathroom intruding into the shape. On the plus side it was quiet, the bed was "big and firm" and the pillows "generous". The shower, however, in a "roll top bath", with a "wraparound curtain" was "precarious". Design-wise, tartan was a "furnishing theme". The best thing was the service. The receptionist was "cheery" and the restaurant staff "quick and efficient", serving with "panache and alacrity". The reviewer and his wife took coffee outside and it was there "in a jiffy". The food itself was "very good" (starter) and "excellent" (main course). The breakfast was only "average" and he suggests guests should "get down early".

Apart from a coach party there were only four other guests which left the bar "dead" at 10.30pm. Although the reviewer did not sample it, the hotel has a new "must-have" spa facility, although he noted that the swimming-pool looked "dated" in comparison.

Overall he awards it 7/10 for value.
