For anyone who has ever had the pleasure to visit Huddersfield, which despite many people's reactions, actually seems like quite a pleasant city with good education and shopping facilities, what it doesn't offer is many high quality hotels, at least, not that I have been able to find.
LOCATION
The Cedar Court Hotel, is a privately owned outlet, formerly owned by Hilton International is situated at Ainley Top, a short distance from junction 24 of the M62, and a few miles from Huddersfield city centre. A taxi into the University would set you back around £5. The hotel is also about 5 minutes away from the McAlpine stadium.
The city is on the edge of West Yorkshire and close to the Peak District, and therefore the Cedar Court makes a comfortable and convenient venue for exploring the area.
The Cedar Court is an imposing looking 70's style building with ample on-site parking. To access the car-park, you need to turn immediate left off the roundabout from the dual carriageway as if you were going towards the local area, then almost immediate left into the hotel.
CHECK-IN
The hotel was booked through an agent at a rate of £70 bed and breakfast, as opposed to £99 room only through the Cedar Courts standard tariff. Check-in was swift, requiring the customary completion of your personal details and car-registration for their records, and a swipe of your credit card for those customers wishing to charge extras to their room. I was paying for both myself and my colleague, but for those customers without cards, I am guessing you would be required to settle the room fee up front to ensure you are good for the money.
THE ROOM
Fairly standard fare, twin beds, workbench, remote controlled colour TV, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities and en-suite with bath and shower. The room had ample lighting and electric plugs. It also had wireless internet access throughout the hotel provided by Eurospot, at a cost of £17 for 24 hours.
LEISURE FACILITIES
There is always a reason why I select a hotel, usually putting leisure facilities and high speed internet access at the top, with location coming an important, but not necessarily crucial second. The Cedar Court has a gym, swimming pool, very effective Spa, that really did remove the trauma of a 7 hour drive, including 1½ hours getting through a 12 mile stretch of the M60.
The sauna and steam room however, are not for the fainthearted, the words 'cat' and 'swing' spring to mind. They look like a late addition to the leisure facilities, and do not allow two people to pass by each other inside them, I entered the Steam room while a local was using it, and ended up trapped in the corner with him at the exit, I felt extremely uncomfortable and vulnerable, and to make matters worse, the small area made the temperature unbearable very quickly, not an experience to be repeated.
FOOD
Always a good measure for evaluating a hotel, they have a restaurant and bar, and offer a wide range of snacks and meals. I selected a Chicken Passanda and rice for £12.95 which, thanks to my colleague being rather tired, I enjoyed in my room. They also offer Paninis with various filling.
Breakfast was a sumptuous buffet feast of bacon, sausage, eggs, beans, mushrooms, hash browns, accompanied by juices, fruit & cereals selection, pastries, cold meats and toast washed down with freshly brewed tea or coffee. It was all fresh, and the desire to eat more than you wanted, really was (and unusually for many hotels in my experience) quite overwhelming.
MY VERDICT
Definitely a hotel I would use again if travelling in this part of the world, I was quite overwhelmed with the facilities and comfort of the hotel and would be more than happy to spend a longer period here. The only negatives I can really identify was the size of the steam room. The food was superb, the location convenient (although if you are a party-goer you may wish to explore outlets closer to the city) The receptionists were not over friendly but were very efficient.
In my opinion, highly recommended
