The writer consider the 'Pen' to be "THE Hong Kong hotel" and says no other hotel "encapsulates the total Hong Kong experience" as well. It's both "grand and hip" - something few hotels anywhere have achieved and it stays "ahead of the times". Whilst it's historically an old hotel (built in 1928) it has a very young "attitude". The author didn't really stay at the hotel, but he used several of the hotel's facilities. He describes the lobby as "elegant" and the breakfast as "very good", served in a "grand atmosphere". He also visited the "grandiose, awe-inspiring pool" and calls the "ionic columns and stairway...a sight to be seen". The Felix restaurant "is also worthy of a visit".
