Heathrow Airport is the UK's largest airport and also probably the busiest!
The Airport consisits of 4 terminals and will soon be 5 with the opening of the new British Airways terminal. The airport has many different airlines using it and is frequently used by a lot of the bigger airlines that don't use any other UK airport such as South African airways, Qantas or Air Mauritius.
Many UK domestic flights come into this arport simply to connect to a lot of these airlines that cannot be taken from other airports to take passengers to far flung destinantions and the airport is constantly busy and has thousands of people milling around it!
The airport is well equipeed with hundreds of staff, plenty of seats and lounges and lots of other amenities such as toilets, internet access, telephones and a direct link to London's underground. The airport has walkways to connect passengers in transit that have to go from one terminal to the other but they can also use the tube line aswell to coonect the terminals - especially if the idea of the long walk isn't appealing! The airport has food places and amazingly are not any more expensive than other airports but still not the cheapest places to eat!
I've always found in transit through that it has been relatively easy to connect to my other flights and also doing standard domestic flights are simple enough especially if using online check in as it does make things a lot quicker. However this is not to say that the airport is not without it's downsides.
The main things for me that I find a low point is that because of the sheer size it can be rather tiresome so have to do so much walking or connecting to other areas. Also I find the decor a bit glum compared to other UK airports that are more 'modern' or just generally 'brighter' in the decor which can altogether make the airport experience feel a bit drab or boring! Due toit's size there will always be problems for passengers who are struggling to find there way around and I think a lot of missed connections because of the size is always going to be an issue!
Overall Heathrow has what it needs to be an great airport as it is used by hundreds of airlines but, it would greatly benefit a more easier system for passenegrs who are in transit. Is this something that could be done? I'm not sure as it would need to be mighty good but until then don't expect a visit to Heathrow to be a quiet one - it's always busy, busy, busy in this place!
