The author of this Fodors' review characterizes the fort as an "imposing fortress" whis is "ringed by a dry moat". Though the castle had already been "outdated" when it was finalized, it is still a "fine example of a mid-Victorian polygonal fort". The author recommends a visit also to visitors who don't care about military history but who just want to profit from the view from up there. There's also a "traditional skirling ceremony" on offer which is performed once weekly (Mondays) during November to March of each year.
