The timber framed building dates back to the 16th century and was home to the Dunmow Corperation from 1555 onwards until it was abolished during the reform of 1885. The Town Hall features a small turret on top of its roof which houses a bell that used to function as market bell and fire bell at the same time.
Since the 19th century the mock trials during the Flitch ceremony are held in the function room on the first floor of the building and the ground floor is presently occupied by an estate agent.
