[more]The Dutch Reformed Church, also known as Grotekerk, is located in the centre of Graaff-Reinet and is a replica of the Cathedral in Salisbury.
Situated at the northern end of Church Street it is the fourth church that has been built on the exactly same location. The building works on the church started in 1886 and the sandstone property is regarded as one of the best examples for early Gothic style architecture in the country.
The steeple of the building measures a proud 150 ft and the reading desk of the pulpit is more than 9ft above the floor.
The Dutch Reformed Church, which offers seating for 1500 worshippers, sports stained glass windows and is home to a collection of ecclesiastical silver that is so valuable that it can only be viewed in pictorial form.
The rarest feature of this church is probably its chimney which leads to a fireplace in the vestry.
