Fish friday is an amazing event which was developed after Hurricane Ivan in '04. The community of Gouyave ( Fishing Village) got together with the idea of producing an event which would boost the economy of the town, while raising awareness for the fishing industry. Additionally, it was set up to create a link to the different parts of the islands economy, including the agricultural and cultural sectors.
This has proven to be a resounding success, as the many different vendors produce a diverse selection of culinary delights and coupled with cultural shows, like the Tivoli Drummers, have proved to be a long lasting attraction to visitors and locals alike.
This resurgence in local cooking is well planned and organised and has met its goal of providing a significant means of income to the low income sector.
On a more personal note, we try to visit the festival at least twice monthly, and it has become a meeting place for people island wide.
Fish Friday has developed into a major tourist attraction and tour companies have organised trips there every friday. With over 30 vendors offing tasty examples of typical island cooking at lower prices and an amazing array of dishes, shrimp, lobster, marlin, dolfin, jacks, snapper etc, this event has proven to be an fitting example of friendly Grenadian hospitality and cooking.
The down side to this festival is that it is about an hours drive from the main tourist areas, along the west coast in the town of Gouyave. Because of this, we advise people to go with an organised tour or familiarize themselves with driving here before attempting the trip.
