Cheap and cheerful in Glasgow

[timelord, 29.05.2008] Good basic hotel bang in the middle of Glasgow, easily accessible by car or foot.
  • Whilst the room was clean and had all the mod cons the guest could wish for - from coffee/tea making facilities to an interactive TV that offered a range of films (ranging from family to adult) & internet access - it was let down by the stale smell of smoke.
The double bed was firm - a mattress resting on a simple wooden board - but was not uncomfortable.
The view was of a grey office block, but at the basic budget prices offered by the Ibis, this would not be a consideration for the majority of hotel guests.
The bathroom was a decent size - unlike some gaffs where the shower has been shoehorned into a glorified cupboard - although slightly let down by a lack of basic shower gel & shampoo.

    Lobby Atmosphere
  • The Ibis is somewhat dwarfed by its Novotel neighbour, but it looks exactly like what is says on the proverbial tin - new & cheap. In fact, thinking about it, the facade reminds me of the cheap looking (but not costing!) PFI/PPP schools sprouting up throughout the country.
The lobby is open plan, with an area to the right as you walk in signposted as the 'business' area. Constituting a few tables & chairs & little privacy I do not foresee a huge demand for this particular facility, but it is a decent enough area to sit and scan a newspaper prior to hitting the streets of the city.
The lobby staff are jolly and eager to please, although a couple of them lacked confidence whilst using the computerised booking system, or indeed working out the price of a glass of wine (the bar is in effect a continuation of the front desk) which took a good 10 minutes of frantic mouse scrolling and furrowed brows.

    Food Quality
  • This is not fine dining, but there again you would not expect it to be. However, the food is typical basic Scottish fare - chips, steak, roast chicken, pasta & curry - with no pretensions, but tastes good and fills a hole. However, I do wish that salad and garnish came with a dressing, a common fault in hotels throughout Scotland from budget up to prestige hotels.
The dining area looks towards the lobby, and has a tinge of the railway waiting room about it, but it is clean, there are a couple of TV's to watch & the staff ask if the customer has enjoyed the food.
A large glass of wine came in at £4.95, with the bar offering draught beers (but no Guinness!) & a selection of bottled German and Dutch beers.
