[more]The museum is located within the castle of Girne. It is home to the oldest shipwreck of a trading ship, including cargo, which has been recovered so far.
It was discovered by a sponge diver at a depth of only 3 metres, less than a mile from the harbour of Girne. Tests applied to the 15-metre body of the ship show that it was made of Jerusalem pine and dates back to 389 BC. Scientists have also conducted tests on the cargo some ancient almonds and found out that they date back to the year 288 BC, which lead them to the conclusion that the ship was 81 years old when it perished.
The ship and its load, more than 400 wine amphorae from Rhodos and 29 basalt mill stones as well as the 900 perfectly preserved almonds can be seen in the museum.
Further artifacts from the wreck that are displayed include fishing net weights made of lead, pots, a cauldron, wooden cutlery and cups presumed to be the personal belonging of he ship's crew.
