[more]Birdoswald was one of the forts built on Hadrian's Wall and was occupied by units of the Roman army from the early 2nd century to the early 5th. Its defences are considered the best preserved of any along the Wall. In addition, and unusually, it has evidence of occupation up to the 16th century, with finds of wooden halls from the dark ages, medieval 11th century buildings and a 16th century fortified farm. Its location is a commanding position above a meander of the river Irthing and the view into the gorge has been compared to that from Troy.
Visible evidence at the site are the remains of Roman buildings including granaries, a headquarters building and exercise hall. The east gate is particularly well preserved with an arched stone remaining, and excavations at the west gate revealed the various layers of occupation. The site is dominated by the intact farm building and the farm outbuildings have been converted into administration offices, a shop, tearoom and a small museum. Ornamental stones from the fort used to construct the farm buildings can still be seen.
The site is managed by English Heritage and the opening times are on its website. Hadrian's Wall Path runs along the road in front of the fort.
