    Ti Breizh - Hamburg, Germany
A little bit of French in Hamburg (15.04.2008 10:26)
On my last visit to Hamburg, I asked a local colleague for recommendations on where to eat and sadly the proposal I got was for a creperie. I really wasn't that excited by the idea of pancakes (I used to go to Holland a lot and the whole Dutch pancake thing doesn't work for me) but the person I was travelling with fancied the sound of Ti Breizh and couldn't be persuaded out of her choice [more...]

    Die Bank - Hamburg, Germany
You can Bank of a good meal at Die Bank (14.03.2008 12:27)
On my latest trip to Hamburg I asked my boss if I should arrange a team night out and he said 'Sure, just don't pick anything too expensive'. Fortunately before I could scout around for something reasonably priced, another colleague stepped in and booked 'Die Bank' and invited me along. Having been warned to watch the pennies, this wasn't a place I'd have dared book - so hoorah for Laurent who [more...]

Southern Style in a Northern City (05.03.2008 18:05)
When someone suggests a restaurant it's always a good idea to find out why they chose it before you make ANY comment about the place. I live in fear that I'll say something awful only to discover that the place is A - owned by an uncle / sister / close friend of my host or hostess; B - the place they held the wake for her father / grandmother / favourite Labrador; C - the host / hostess's absolutely [more...]

Turnhalle St Georg - Hamburg, Germany
I might go to the gym more if they always had food like this. (25.01.2008 14:16)
Another trip to Hamburg and another invitation for dinner and this time I knew it would be a good restaurant because my French friend Ludovic who lived in Hamburg for several years had chosen it. It's a cliché but generally true that you can trust a Frenchman or an Italian to always find a good restaurant. The table was booked for 6 people - me, two French, an Algerian, a Turk and a South African [more...]

Dry Dumplings and Crumble Grumbles (23.12.2007 23:52)
Another trip to Hamburg and another meal out with colleagues - in this case six of us needed dinner in the week before Christmas. Being at the height of the Christmas Party season, our options were very limited and I'm not sure that we'd have tried this place if others had been available. Unfortunately I can't tell you much about where it is as I got in a taxi and next thing I knew, we were there [more...]

    Au Quai - Hamburg, Germany
Au Quai - was it OK or just trying too hard? (16.09.2007 22:53)
I travel often to Hamburg and have been lucky enough to be invited out to some of the city's nicest restaurants in the past year. On my most recent visit, an Italian colleague told me he'd take me to 'The Best Restaurant in Town' so I should be sure to 'dress up a bit'. Italians have always despaired of my dress sense so that was no great surprise. He ran into one of our French colleagues and so [more...]

    Schauermann - Hamburg, Germany
Small menu but excellent food (13.12.2006 17:48)
This week found me once again in Hamburg and Monday night once again brought an invitation for dinner out in one of the city's many restaurants. This one was chosen by a local colleague who claimed, despite all our protestations of how good it was, that it was just one of many great places. There were six of us in the group two Brits, two Americans, a German lady and a Frenchman. The [more...]

    Sala Thai - Hamburg, Germany
Great Thai Food in the Heart of Hamburg (09.12.2006 00:22)
On a recent trip to Hamburg I was lucky enough to be invited out for dinner with some colleagues. We were a mixed bunch, a Brit (me), an Irishman, an Italian woman and a Frenchman. It sounds like the opening line of a bad joke, doesn't it? The French guy chose the venue - a Thai restaurant on a back street not far from the Alster lake in the centre of Hamburg. He'd been once before and enjoyed it [more...]
  • Holiday Inn Hamburg

Holiday Inn Hamburg - Hamburg, Germany - November, 2006
From free minibars to hairy feet at Holiday Inn (03.12.2006 16:03)
Location The first sensible question you could ask me would be Where is the Holiday Inn, Hamburg? and Im going to have to confess that Im really none to sure. Its on the banks of the Elbe by the Elbbrukke I think thats the bridge I could see from the restaurant. Its in a business area which goes dead after 6 in the evening and whilst its bustling in the day, you would struggle to find [more...]
