The author speaks about Ponte Vecchio and describes it as being the "oldest and most famous bridge" and explains that it was built in "1345 by Taddeo Gaddi to replace an earlier version." There are "characteristic overhanging shops" which line the bridge that have been there since "at least the 12th century." Butcher used to occupy these shops in the 16th Centruy but today the shops are occupied by "the classier gold- and silversmiths, tradesmen."
