My husband and I stayed in La Pirogue in October 2006 when we attended my brother-in-law's wedding. It was a beautiful resort, with excellent service, and the food was delicious and plentiful. The wedding was planned with the highest attention to detail and the photos were fabulous.
We stayed in the first week of October, which was lovely as the the weather is generally mild and breezy in September and early October, but if you are going later than that (mid-October to November) it is much hotter.
La Pirogue is classed as 4 and is adjacent to another resort called Sugar Beach, which is 5. What none of the tour operators tell you is that they are interlinked, and whether you are staying at La Pirogue or Sugar Beach, you can use the facilities of both resorts. Therefore, I'd recommend you save yourself some money and stay in La Pirogue instead of Sugar Beach! The all inclusive board is very good as it includes anything you use from the minibar in your room (well it did when we stayed anyway!) all your meals and all of your drinks. However, be cautious because there are 2 bars and 1 restaurant at which you had to pay extra for your food and drinks, so check with the reception staff about this when you arrive.
The nightlife is excellent and there was a good selection of trips which you could book for with the staff at the hotel, so don't waste your money and book them with your tour operator when booking your holiday! Example of trips available include boat trips around the island to go fishing or dolphin watching (there were others which I can't remember now).
