Themed guesthouses often run the risk of being too personal or even plain weird. Not so in Riad Ibn Battuta, where each of the fantastically themed rooms accounts for a stop on the celebrated Arab explorer's journey from Morocco to China. Take the hot pink silks and smooth brown plaster of the Sindabar suite, for example, where the bathroom takes its lead from the monsoon with three enormous shower heads blasting monsoon-scale waters over your head. Not to your taste? Move south to the Africa suite with its kitsch stucco koubba (domed ceiling) crowning the bed. Or maybe you'd prefer the golden hue of the Damascus suite with its brass and terracotta tiled floor, where you bathe with a naked Roman nymph in your mosaic bathtub. The decor is pure fantasy but facilities are surprisingly pragmatic and favour 21st-century standards - think medical mattresses with a summer and winter side, fire hydrants everywhere, organic French and Moroccan cuisine, real satellite TV (Hotbird & Astra), wi-fi and modern bathroom fixtures and fittings. They also organise the Jazz in Riads festival.
