The description appears on pages 256-258 of the Rough Guide to Morocco, October 2004 edition. The author suggests that if there is just one building the visitor should seek out in Fes, this should be it. It is the "most elaborate, extravagant and beautiful" of the Merenid monuments and "comes close to perfection". It was the "last and grandest" of the medersas built by a Merenid sultan, Abou Inan, who ruled 1351 - 1358. A separate text box explains the function of medersas: "student colleges and residence halls" originating in Iran and spreading west to reach Morocco in the 14th century.
