Top-notch luxury hotel in prime location

The author believes that the main attraction of the "unofficial guesthouse" of the German government are its "almost mythical predecessor" and its "prime" location. We are told that the Adlon was the "ultimate luxury resort" until it was destroyed in WW2 and has now been rebuilt with "elegant rooms" and a "1920s style" decor. Expect "large bathrooms" and "myrtle-wood furnishings" and "a Brandenburg Tor view" if you want to splash out for a suite.
For "people watching" the writer recommends a cuppa in the lobby and further states that not only the spa of the hotel but also the "annex of fine restaurants" under the regime of "Germany's top chef" made a "huge splash". The writer was impressed by the "surprisingly large rooms" of this "top-notch luxury hotel" and also liked it's "excellent" restaurants but was far less convinced by the "sometimes stiff service" that was delivered with "an attitude" , the noise level in some of the rooms if the windows are open and the "often crowded" lobby that was otherwise "inviting".

First opened in 1907, this "grand" hotel has had many ups and downs but reopened as part of the Kempinski chain in a reunified Berlin in 1997.

Following in the footsteps of the "glitterati", the reviewer felt overawed by its "five-star credentials". However, its "reassuringly understated glamour" made him "feel at home". The bed was "massive", as was the bathroom, but the colour scheme was "unobtrusive" and the furnishings "stylish". All the rooms "virtually guarantee" a view, usually of the Brandenburg Gate, and the reviewer had an "unobstructed" view of the Holocaust memorial.

Both the lobby, with its music and "clinking glasses", and the Michelin-starred restaurant reminded the reviewer of a "1920s theme park". The "deliberate evocation of the past" is represented by a "centennial banquet" once a month featuring "culinary highlights" from past decades. It is accompanied by wine from "past wine lists" and vintage Madeira. Breakfast was a "cornucopia" which included champagne, reminding the reviewer that this was a "truly first class establishment".

Overall he found it neither "kitsch" nor "ironic", and not "edgy, dynamic or innovative" either, but certainly full of "old-fashioned elegance".

he 1997 re-opened Adlon is "more than a Berlin landmark", the author sees it as an "enormous promise". In the "plush" and "spacious" lobby, you could feel the "aura" that "distinguishes" it from other 5 star hotels. The author feels "spirit". The re-build hotel is a "marriage" of "modern efficiency" and "old-world". elegance. You could find this also in the "sleek" meeting rooms. This is appreciated by the guest, making it "gathering place" for the society in Berlin and "preferred" hotel of "American executives". The extraordinary service concept is underlined by quoting the sales director, that the guest just has to tell what he wants to get it. William Boston concludes, the Adlon offers "great atmosphere" and "a certain ellegance".

Berlin´s most historic hotel

According to Frommers the Adlon is Berlin´s "most historic" hotel. It is "a phoenix freshly risen from the ashes of 1945" and is closer than any other hotel to the Brandenburger Gate. The hotel is "grand" and "historic". It was reopened "with a well-publicized flourish" in 1997 "after a massive expenditure of funds". In the public areas are "coffered ceilings, mosaics, inlaid paneling and lots of Carrara marble" and some of the public areas are even "illuminated with lavishly detailed stained-glass domes". The rooms are "mostly large" and there are "lots of state-of-the-art electronic extras". The rooms on the top floor "offer the best views", but are "a bit cramped and lack some extras". All rooms are equipped with a "spacious" bathroom. Frommers awards the hotel "3 stars" which indicate that it is rated as an "exceptional" establishment.
