The author rated this hotel as 3 stars out of the maximum of 3 stars. Frommers indicates this hotel is exceptional. The author describes this as the "most famous" hotel in Hong Kong. If you are an "incurable romantic" and have a "penchant" for the past, this is the place to stay. This hotel is built in 1928, it has the "largest limousine fleets of Rolls-Royces in the world". It "exudes elegance" with its "white-gloved doorman". The lobby has "high gilded ceilings" and "reminiscent of a Parisian palace". It is the "foremost spot" for "afternoon tea". The hotel lost its "fabled" harbor view due to the construction of Space Museum. But in 1993, the hotel "remedied" the problem for the guest rooms and the top-floor restaurant with a "magnificent 32-story tower" with "fantastic harbor views". The hotel offers classes such as "tai chi", cooking classes and "feng shui" for the "culture-minded" guests. The "new spa" is for the "travel-weary", it provides passage to "rejuvenation". The sauna even provides a view of the harbor. The author "absolutely love this place".

The guest rooms are "spacious" and "wonderfully equipped", the "jaded travellers" will be "impressed". The beds are "gigantic". The rooms are equipped with "mood lighting", "tightly focused" bedside reading lights and "silent fax machine". The bathrooms are "huge" and furnished with "two sinks", separate shower stall and bathtub. The author advised it is worth the extra money for the "stunning harbor view" if you can afford it, because the view of the back rooms are a "disappointment". The rooms from the older part of the hotel are "marred" by the Space Museum.

The author describes the Peninsula Hotel,Hong Kong which was established in 1928 as "synonymous with impeccable taste and colonial glamour" however it is pointed out that whilst "many people adore this hotel" it is felt that "time may well have left this hotel behind". The bedrooms "feel gaudy and overpriced" whilst features include "stodgy, uncomfortable sofas, awkward desks, chandeliers, and outdated TV systems". The spa is "decked out with faux-Roman statues" which " are all show without a sense of style" and we are told that even the "hotel's famous Rolls-Royces feel dingy these days". To stay in the Peninsula will cost you "US$600 for the cheapest harbor-view room" and the author maintains that "the only thing keeping up with the times is the price". It is however recommended to visit here just for the "famous high tea in the lobby bar".

The 75 year old building is considered to be Hong Kong´s "most historic" hotel and as "one of he world´s finest" hotels. It offers a blend of "the best of Eastern and Western hospitality". The hotel provides services like a helicopter shuttle service and a "fleet" of Rolls-Royce limousines. There is "state-of-the-art" fitness centre and a "huge" "Roman style" pool. The sun terrace offers an "incredible" view of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island. The dining options are among "the most exclusive" in Hong Kong. The afternoon tea in the lobby is a "Hong Kong institution" and the hotel´s restaurant Gaddi´s is Hong Kong´s "most elegant" dining option. The other restaurant in the hotel, the Felix, was designed by Philipe Starck and is the city´s "most chic and stylish" place.

The writer consider the 'Pen' to be "THE Hong Kong hotel" and says no other hotel "encapsulates the total Hong Kong experience" as well. It's both "grand and hip" - something few hotels anywhere have achieved and it stays "ahead of the times". Whilst it's historically an old hotel (built in 1928) it has a very young "attitude". Plenty of designers have made their mark on the hotel - from Denton Corker's design of the China Clipper lounge bar - ideal for guests departing by helicopter - to the Felix restaurant designed by Philippe Starck, there are pleny of things that make this a "firm favourite" with the fashionable people of HK . At the Felix, the food is "every bit as adventurous" as the design and this is "one of the most photographed restaurants" in the world. If something more traditional is preferred, guests can hop in the lift and drop 28 floors to the "1920's-inspired" Spring Moon restaurant which is "decadent and colonial" with food that is "refined Cantonese".

The Pen succeeds in being "an institution" in a city with "little affection for nostalgia". One of the attractions is "unparalleled view" of the city skyline - even the gents toilets on the 27th floor have "one of the best views in all HK". After she celebrated her 60th birthday in 1988, the owners felt the Pen was "showing her age" and set about adding a 30-storey tower to the structure. This included 130 rooms, the heliport, the Felix restaurant and a "spectacular" pool and spa. Somehow the Pen managed to "keep all the elements that made it great" whilst removing "the stuff that made it stuffy" and the best people still love the Pen. The Asian Wall Street journal apparently commented that "what attracts the clientele is the clientele"

The guide says that the term "five star hotel" is a "woefully inadequate description" for the Peninsula which he calls a "newly crowned empress" of the Hong Kong hotel scene, having always been "a Hong Kong icon", which also opened the "city's first discotheque in 1966". About the rooms, they are said to be "decorously fitted out" and the Felix restaurant has been "celebrated" for its "eclectic cuisine" and its "Philippe Starck design". The hotels spa is managed by "expert trichologist Wing Tan". However, the "cornerstone" of the hotel has "always been its lobby" with "gilded pillars" and "equally gilded air".
Overall, "ambience", "staff", "location", "cleanliness" and "restaurants" are all rated "9" out of 10.
