For the reviewer, the Royal Highland is the "classic Scottish railway station hotel", which meant having to take "only have a few footsteps" to reach the hotel. On arrival, one notices a "quite grand" lobby and its "sweeping staircase". Their room, which was "recently [...] renovated" was "quite nice" and he found it "spacious" and "well furnished". He notes however that this was "one of the coldest" rooms he had ever stayed in, so much so that the towel warmer was "a very much appreciated touch". Although when he stayed their the prices were reasonable, he notes that they now "seem to have climbed", perhaps to suit the "Royal moniker" they now have.
Frommers describes the Royal Highland Hotel as a "somber gray-stone hotel" which was "built in 1859" and is "like Inverness of yesterday ". Across the road from the railway station it is very well located. He continues to describe the interior of the hotel as "antiques-strewn" and "slightly faded" though "gradual modernizations" are underway and now there is "contemporary decor in half of the guest rooms". He tells us the "other half are charmingly dowdy" though each has ensuite facilities. The massive lobby he says has the "showiest staircase in Inverness" while the dining room "retains its elaborate high ceiling" giving it "a sense of the Victorian age". "Seafood and Shellfish" are specialties of the house which the author recommends.
Frommers recommends a visit to the Royal Highland Hotel in Inverness.
