I have only had the pleasure of staying at this hotel once, partly due to its extortionate prices but I would give this place the highest of ratings possible, possibly because it’s the most posh hotel I have ever stayed in but even so. The staffs were all helpful and considerate and, although I never dined at the hotel the comments I heard on the food were spectacular.

On a weekend trip to Edinburgh my one requirement in a hotel was that it needed to be close to everything so I was looking at the Newtown area of the city and when I came across the George hotel which is located on george street it sounded ideal.
For those unfamiliar with Edinburgh George street is located paralel to Princess street which is the main street in the city and the one that seperates the Old town from the New town. Even better the hotel is located on the end of the street meaning that Waverly train station and the airport bus are just a few short minutes away.

When we arrived at the hotel first impressions were excellent as it is housed in a Georgian building which is both impossing and stunning.
George street is a very busy road with lot's of trafic but as soon as we entered the hotel this was soon forgotten and it was peaceful and tranquil and we could no longer hear the roar of the traffic outside.
Next to the main entrance there is a consierge desk where you can stop and ask for information on different attractions and get directions to the sites.
The lobby is large andalso has some more impressive architectural features such as classical columns and lovely old coven. It was all kept in great condition and decorated nicely and there were some comfortable couches and chairs sprawled about for the use of the guests. This is quite a nice area as a few guests were making use of it and reading their papers and drinking coffee and it had a good atmosphere.

It was quite busy with guests checking in but the reception staff were both efficient and friendly and we soon had our room keys with directions on how to reach our rooms. The hotel is quite large and sprawling and it felt like we actually entered another buildin but I am unsure if this was the case or not.
The room itself was nice but a little dissapointing considering we were staying in a grand old Georgian building it felt as though it could have been in any room in any hotel in the world as there were no features to indicate we were in an old building in the heart of Edinburgh.
It was decorated nicely but simply and it had all the aminities you would expect from a 4 star hotel. The bed was lovely and comfortable and the sheets were of a good quality. The cleanliness was excellent and not something I could fault during our stay.
There was a mini bar and a flat screen V but as we were here to see the sights we didn't really make much use of either. Again something else we didn't use but is available is internet in the room but this has to be paid for and costs £10 for 24 hours so not bad but I do wish hotels would include it for free.
The bathroom matched the room in that it was nice but simple and again I couldn't fault the cleanliness of it. It had plenty of towels and toiletries and a bath with a shower overhead.

The hotel has it's own restaurant and bar called The Tempus which really is a cut above the usual hotel offering. It was clearly popular with the residents of the city and not just guests at the hotel and when we stayed it was always busy.
It has a really trendy look to it but at the same time it fits in perfectly with the Georgian architecture. We didn't ea here but the cocktails were gorgeous and although quite expensive we spent an enjoyable evening in here and even if you don't stay at the hotel I can recommend this as somewhere to visit.

Breakfast wasn't included in the price of the hotel but we decided to treat ourselves and have it even though it was an eyewatering £16.50 each. The dining room was large and there were plenty of staff around but the buffet was dissapointing in the selection of foods available and I have enjoyed better breakfasts at much cheaper hotels with less stars to it's name.
Getting the breakfast was also awkward instead of just giving our room number to the member of staff who was sitting guests and having it charged to our bill we actually had to go to the reception and pay in cash for it and get a token to show them which was actually a little annoying.

The George isn' the cheapest hotel in Edinburgh but it isn't the most expensive either and we paid just over £200 for the two nights we stayed here which I don't think was bad as it really is in the centre and within walking distance of all the attractions and sights that I wanted to visited.
The staff were great and the room comfortable and I would definately recommend this hotel but do yourself a favour and skip the breakfast as it is over priced and not really all that great quality and have it at one of the many cafes in the area.
