The author describes the Malmaison Edinburgh as once being "a seamen's hostel" which was located in "the heart of Leith" but now offers "stylish digs 10 minutes by bus from the city center" He continues that the public areas are decorated in a "dramatic black, cream, and taupe color scheme" whilst the bedrooms boast "King-size beds, CD players, and satellite TV" and are " decorated in a bold, modern style". " The French theme" continues "in the Café Bar and Brasserie, which serves food all day" although service might be a bit "erratic".

Having dispensed with a couple of miscenceptions about the hotel's name ("Doesn't Malmaison mean 'bad home' in French?") and ("isn't Leith the used-needle-littered home to the Trainspotting crew?") Tom Templeton quite liked his experience of this "super-chic" three-star hotel. The public rooms were stylishly comfortable and the staff accommodating. Guestrooms were fully appointed with "one of the most comfortable" beds he had "ever slept in". This Malmaison was created from a century-old "refitted sailor's mission" and sits in the midst of the "extensive redevelopment" at the Edinburgh docks and waterfront. He also found it close to and easy enough to get to the "action" in the city centre. There was plenty of night life in the locality. Noting the hotel's wide ranging clientelle (families, holidaymakers, young professionals) he discovered the "tasty neo-French cuisine" and "smart decor" of the restaurant very popular with locals too.
