Edinburgh Castle is a Little Phony

Reviewer Jonny L., a resident of Edinburgh, begins by characterizing the Castle as "truly beautiful, sitting at the city centre "like a crown"--an ornament that enhances every view that includes it. His judgments about the "castle experience" are another matter. He says that he agrees with other reviewers “who complain about the price" but aside from admission fees that are too high and queues that are too long, he feels that "Edinburgh Castle is a little phony." He explains that though it is "presented as some symbol of Scottishness," the only bits of the Castle that really qualify are portions of the Great Hall and St. Margaret's Chapel. Most of the rest, he reports, are vintage Victorian--noting that parts of it feel "like a series of New Town villas."

The reviewer does enjoy the war museum, which is "based in the castle grounds"--noting that he can actually "learn something from it." "The rest," he says, is "a bit boring." He describes the presence of "several over priced restaurants and tourist gifts shops" as a let-down. With so many of these on the Royal Mile, he asks, "does our premier historical site" need to add to the count?

All this aside, the reviewer concludes that "Edinburgh Castle is worth a visit," as there are "moments when it does impress." He grants that "you can feel the nostalgia." He rates the Castle at 3 of a possible 5 stars.

Edinburgh Castle sits on history and is history itself. It created it--the history of a town we now call Edinburgh. It is the ultimate castle, everything you might want from one when you are not from Great Britain.
As a tourist, I was amazed by the beauty of the castle. Positioned on top of a volcanic rock, the castle is amazing in its nature and looks.
I started my tour with a book in one hand and a recorded guide in the other, with headphones on my head. Every room and every attraction and monument has a number. When you press the button on the audio guide, you begin to listen. And you hear history you never knew before.
Stories of enchanted rooms, of prisoners, of drama and joy.
And then suddenly you hear the 1 O'clock gun. The pictures you take near it are never to be forgotten. You can see the entire city from the castle and the view is amazing.
Whatever direction you look, you can either see the mountains of The Kingdom of Fife, Princes Street Gardens, or Royal Mile.
There is history all around you and a lot of material for your incredible story telling after you are back from your holiday in this amazing city and area.

Edinburgh's most famous landmark and tourist attraction, is at the eastern end of the Royal Mile, a good climb, reasonably easy for those who are fit, and there is parking for "disabled visitors".
St Margaret's chapel, the Great Hall, the Royal Apartments and the Scottish National War Memorial are all interesting places to see. The One o'clock gun is something to "set your watch by"!
Times and prices are given, Tricia, the author of this review, suggests it would have been better to have had a guided tour. Most things were seen in one hour, she learned a lot, it was worth visiting but she is not sure on value for money.

Although she lives in Edinburgh, this reviewer doesn't feel she is "overly biased" in her opinion of Edinburgh Castle, "one of the most spectacular" anywhere. She reviews it first in a series on Scottish Castle because she feels it is the "most likely" castle for visitors to see, as one "can not help" noticing it "atop its rocky base".

It is only "short walk up" to the "huge and imposing" edifice before you have to pay the somewhat "high" entry fee, but it is possible to see "the best part" of the castle, i.e. its exterior, for nothing.

We visited Edinburgh Castle as part of a day trip, during a long weekend stay in Scotland, for Hubby's 50th birthday. Although it was late October we had some good weather for our visit. However the day we visited the Castle it was cold and we saw some snow flurries. I would recommend you visit prepared for all weathers just in case.

We walked up to the Castle from the main shopping area of Princess Street. The walk was not bad but a little tiring as part of it is uphill and some steps. There is plenty to see on your way to the Castle and some fine buildings. The Castle offers good views over Edinburgh whether you choose to enter or not. The large area near the entrance is where the Edinburgh Tattoo is held each August and I would love to attend this. You visit this bit for free. However I seem to remember the Castle was not too exoensive to visit.

Once we were exploring inside we walked along the Castle Walls. The views over Edinburgh are truly spectacular and you can see many landmarks such as The Royal Yacht Brittania over at Leith Docks and a panoramic view of Edinburgh. Hubby took some great video shots from here but it was a little cold and the air was bracing.

One of things I was interested to see was, looking a little over the walls, the pet cemetary. The little gravestones showing the names of the soldiers dogs were poignant. There are various displays in and around the Castle and the building itself is very well maintained. The cannon still is fired on a regular basis.

As we were only visiting Edinburgh for four or five hours we were limited for time. As we left the Castle we visited a few of the shops at the start of the Royal Mile. My experience of visiting Edinburgh and the Castle has whetted my appetitie for more and we will definitely return. As yet though we have not managed a visit. The area around the Castle can be a little pricey as it is a tourist area visited by all nationalities.

Some parts will be hard to access for people with mobility issues.

Barry Shelby introduces Edinburgh Castle

Barry Shelby gives a rating of highly recommended or one of three stars for Edinburgh Castle. Noting that it has public transportation access via "Bus: 28 or 35" with admission varying by age, but as of December 2006 it was "£9.50 ($18) adults, £7 ($13) seniors and students, and £2 ($3.70) children age 15 and under".

Barry says "few places in Scotland are filled with as much lore as Edinburgh Castle" which was started back in the 11th century by "Malcolm III and his Saxon queen" and added on by various successors. Of the original structure only St. Margarets Chapel remains and it is "the oldest structure in Edinburgh". The structures which remain today of the castle "are basically those that resulted from the castles' role as a "military garrison" dating back to the 1700s. Many of the displays are "devoted to military history".

At five tons the "medieval siege cannon, known as Mons Meg" is on duty guarding the castle. Some of the walls of the great storerooms contain wall carvings which were put there by prisoners from the Napoleonic wars. The "Scottish Crown Jewels" are another feature to be seen here.

The castle "looms Edinburghs main shopping street and much of the city" and is "the first place I take them" when visitors come to see sjmclaughlin. It has been "built and rebuilt several times over the centuries" allowing it to display "a variety of different architectural styles". The smallest part, still used in weddings and the like is "St. Margarets chapel, a tiny room which can hold a maximum of 10 people". There is an available tape for rent that gives "the castles role in Scottish history". History buffs "may want to spend all day at the castle".

Perched high on the top of an extinct volcanic outcrop Edinburgh Castle stands proudly, dominating the city skyline and offering fantastic views of Edinburgh and areas.

Over the years the castle has seen a lot of history unfold and each Royal resident who occupied it modified or added to the original structure, so todays castle is an architectural mixture of Palace, Fortress, Barracks, Chapel and War Memorial..There are so many thing to see that a free CD - based audio tour is full of fascinating
information but this is over four hours long and is available in six languages. For those who just like to wander about I suggest a minimum of two hours for your visit.

You will be able to enjoy seeing the Laich Hall restored to its former splendour evident at the time James V1 was in residence in 1617. The Castle is also home to the Scottish Crown Jewels , the oldest Royal Regalia in Britain. Displayed with the Crown Jewels is the Stone of Destiny returned to Scotland as recently as 1996 after 700 years
in England. It was the Coronation Stone of Scottish Kings such as MacBeth and John Baliol before its removal to England by Edward in 1296.

The Castle houses the new National War Museum of Scotland and the Royal Scots and the Scots Dragoon Guards regimental museums. It is also home to the Scottish National war Memorial and not forgetting the world famous One OClock Gun .
There is also another new exhibition about the Guns history this can be found at the
stairway leading to the Western defences. The One O Clock Gun is not fired on Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday but it booms out over Edinburgh every other day of the year.

With the many sights on offer a camera is essential to capture the stunning views .A picture of Mons Meg the giant medieval siege gun seems to be high on everybodys list.

I f you are ready for a refreshment break then relax at the Queen Anne and Redcoat Cafés and enjoy unique views of the City of Edinburgh the ideal place for a reviving cuppa.
There are also the usual souvenir shops the Castle Crown Jewel Shop, the Bookshop and the Main Castle Gift Shop offer a large range of must have tourist memorabilia.

Adult £10.30 Child £4.50 Concessions £8.50
Last tickets sold at 5.15pm (4.15pm in winter).
Child (ages 5 - 15); Concession (60 years and over and the unemployed).

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Guided tours
Castle stewards provide guided tours and you can also hire an audio guide - available in six languages. Trails for children are also available.
Costs:
£3 adult £2 concession (for the over 60 and the unemployed) £1 child (for those aged between 5 and 15 years).

The Castle is open 7 days a week from 9.30am closing at either 5pm or 6pm depending on season and is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.There is reasonable wheel chair access and disabled toilets are available.
There are no Car parking facilities at the castle.
Courtesy vehicle
A courtesy vehicle is available to take visitors with disabilities from the esplanade to Crown Square.
Please contact the castle in advance to discuss your requirements.

To sum up no visit to Edinburgh would be complete without a climb up the Royal Mile and a visit to the Castle. It really is well worth it. So if you find yourself in the Capital with a few hours to spare I highly recommend this excursion and I give it 10 out of 10

Die Autorin gibt einen guten Eindruck in das meist besuchtestste Touristenziel Schottlands. Nach ihrer 2 Stunden Besichtigung war sie begeistert von der Geschichte, die man in Edinburgh Castle spürt. Die Erreichbarkeit ist nicht ganz einfach: "many steps to climb and steep bits to walk". Auf die historische Bedeutung geht die Autorin mit einer knappen Zusammenfassung ein ("It was the seat of Scottish Kings, but has also been occupied from the English..."). Allerdings ist sie begeistert von dem Zustand des historischen Gebäudes: "the wonderful preservation and restoration that has been done on the building". Den Eintritt empfindet sie als etwas teuer ("a bit expensive").
