The Leopold Hotel is "Sheffield's first boutique hotel", located in "a colossal late-19th Century building". 99 rooms are situated in the former "boys' grammar school", which still preserves some features from the past like "a splendid coat rack" and "black-and-white photographs of boys".

At the reception guests receive "a warm welcome " and when the room is chosen, the receptionist advises "to keep the window closed" because of the noise. The room looks impressive and has "an iPod docking station", "generous pillows", "plenty of hanging space" and a "smart bathroom".

The Hotel has a bar, but no restaurant. However, it is possible to "eat perfectly well" in the bar and there are some well known places to eat near by.

The breakfast room is "noisy" with "harsh" light and "laminated wood tables". The breakfast buffet offers "the full English"with "fried bread and baked beans", which the author finds "not very boutique". Instead of the scrambled egg, which "looks past its best", he makes a query for "poached eggs" - "they're perfect".

After all the author admits that his stay at this hotel is "top of the class".

Formerly a school, then offices, this hotel has been "stylishly" converted. Inside is a "pleasant pedestrian space" and old photos and benches are reminders of its original use.

The room was "small and beige". Although the bed was "comfortable" and the bathroom "efficient", the whole room lacked "character". Worst of all was the "sheer end-wall" outside the window which meant no view and left the room "gloomy".

The bar was occupied by corporate types, and although they could have eaten here, the reviewer and his partner chose the restaurant. "Stuck" down a corridor in the basement, it was a design disaster". Little natural light meant it was "dreary", which matched the décor, and it was "cluttered". The meal did not make up for it. The food was "bland" and "thin" and expensive for what was on offer. Breakfast next morning was "unremarkable". Although the receptionists had been "friendly and helpful" the restaurant service was "charmless and clueless".

Overall the reviewer gave it 5/10, with 4/10 for the food and service.
